2016: The Year Ahead in Youth Literature

2016: The Year Ahead in Youth Literature

2015 is almost over, can you believe it!?  Only 2.5 weeks to go, how crazy is that!  I honestly don’t know where this year has gone, but the last couple of months has been filled with bookish events for me.  I went to an amazing event on 1 December 2015, 2016: The Year Ahead in Youth Literature hosted by the Centre for Youth Literature.  Representatives from a number of publishing houses attended, filling us in on all the wonderful books they have for us next year, and there are so many I’m looking forward to reading! When I arrived, I was given a book as a gift, Six of Crows (The Dregs #1) by Leigh Bardugo, but I already owned […]

Australian YA Bloggers & Readers’ Secret Santa 2015

Australian YA Bloggers & Readers’ Secret Santa 2015

Hi guys!  I love a good book swap and Christmas seems to bring out the best with the extra element of Secret Santa!  Last year I took part in the Secret Santa run by The Broke and the Bookish, but this year I’ve decided to stick a little closer to home.  I’ve signed up for the Aussie YA Bloggers & Readers’ Secret Santa, which is back for its second year, and I’m super excited about it! As part of the Australian YA Bloggers & Readers Secret Santa Blog Hop, they like to know whether everyone’s been a good or naughty blogger this year.  After all, Santa only gives pressies to the good bloggers, and the naughty ones get lumps of […]

I’ve been a very bad blogger…

I’ve been a very bad blogger…

Hello!  Remember me?  *waves sheepishly* I don’t know where the year’s gone.  Honestly, I feel like it was only yesterday that it was Christmas and here we are in the lead up to Christmas once more.  So where have I been? This year has not been a great year for me, blogging wise – personally, it’s been a fantastic year!  But it’s been my personal life which seems to have had the most impact on my ability to blog and I have to be honest, I’m not entirely happy about that. It started when my cousin arrived from Italy a little over 12 months ago, staying for two months.  She stayed with my parents in Melbourne, and at the time […]

Illuminae ~ My first ever book launch!

Illuminae ~ My first ever book launch!

As I’m sure most of you know, Illuminae has finally been released out into the wild for all of us book nerds to gobble up and read.  Last Friday, I had the opportunity to go to the Melbourne book launch of Illuminae and it was fantastic! One of the perks of moving back to Melbourne was the ability to go to bookish events.  A lot of these events are held during the week, and it just wasn’t possible for me to attend while I lived in Bendigo.  This book launch is the perfect example of one such event, and I was so excited to be able to go. The event was held at my favourite book shop, Dymocks on Collins […]

Review: Night Owls by Jenn Bennett

Review: Night Owls by Jenn Bennett

What I Thought… Night Owls, also known as The Anatomical Shape of a Heart in the overseas market, was a genuinely enjoyable read.  This book had everything – teen delinquents, romance, family dramas of every possible kind, and even gory bits!  I read it last week and still haven’t been able to get it out of my head, in the best possible way.  Jenn Bennett’s debut YA novel is a must read for lovers of realistic contemporary YA fiction, where the romance is a feature without overpowering the entire story. Night Owls follows the life of Beatrix, better known as Bex if you know what’s good for you.  Out late one night in San Francisco without her mother’s permission, Bex […]

Review: The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #1) by Rick Riordan

Review: The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #1) by Rick Riordan

What I Thought… Oh my God.  Or Gods, rather.  I don’t even know where to start with this review.  Have you ever enjoyed a book so much that you can’t possibly articulate into words just HOW much you loved it?  That’s how I feel right now, I just want to say “it’s bloody good, read it now!” and be done with it.  Alas, that would be a pretty crappy review, so I’m going to do my best to tell you just how much I love this book.  Here we go… I’d never read anything by Rick Riordan until now and boy did I pick a good time to start!  The Sword of Summer introduces us to Magnus, an orphan living […]

Review: How to Be Happy: A Memoir of Love, Sex and Teenage Confusion by David Burton

Review: How to Be Happy: A Memoir of Love, Sex and Teenage Confusion by David Burton

What I Thought… At times heartbeaking but never demoralising, How to Be Happy takes us on a journey through the author’s confused adolescence and young adulthood through to his eventual acceptance of himself.  Fast paced without skimming over the big issues, How to Be Happy certainly tries to provide an answer to the statement in the title.  And let me tell you, for a book that focuses quite heavily on mental health issues, How to Be Happy was surprisingly funny! It’s been a while since I’ve read a memoir, I’d forgotten just how much I love them.  One of my favourite books of all time is Lucky Man: A Memoir by Michael J. Fox, who coincidentally happens to be one […]

Review: The Boy Most Likely To (My Life Next Door #2) by Huntley Fitzpatrick

Review: The Boy Most Likely To (My Life Next Door #2) by Huntley Fitzpatrick

For those of you who may not know, The Boy Most Likely To is the much anticipated sequel to My Life Next Door (Review), where we were first introduced to the Garretts through their neighbour Samantha.  Tim Mason and Alice Garrett were peripheral characters then but they well and truly hit centre stage here.  After finishing this book, all I could say was “Oh Tim.”  Oh Hon, as Patsy would say!  I wanted to go right back to the start and read it all over again.  Needless to say, Huntley Fitzpatrick has swept me away and made me fall in love with Tim and the Garretts all over again. The Boy Most Likely To picks up about a month where […]
