This week, Aussie bloggers are sharing the love for #LoveOzYA and their favourite Aussie YA reads with this blog hop hosted by Jeann of Happy Indulgence and the rest of the Aussie YA Bloggers and Readers Group mods. I love this community of Aussie bloggers that we have but I haven’t really been a part of it for a while now. I thought this blog hop would be a good way to get back into blogging, by sharing the books I love most and the blogs I
stalk read religiously. So here we go!
1. What you love about Aussie YA
I adore how relatable it is! It’s set in places I’ve been to or know about, and the characters remind me of people I know or even me sometimes! Also, I feel like it’s less clichéd or stereotypical than other YA I’ve read, maybe? It just doesn’t seem to rely on tropes to get the reads – I like that 🙂
2. Favourite Aussie YA authors
Well obviously Melina Marchetta, but that’s just a given 🙂 I also adore Will Kostakis (The First Third slayed me, I was a blubbering mess by the end of it), Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff (OMG Illuminae, say no more!) and Maureen McCarthy (Chain of Hearts is the book of my teen years).
3. The Aussie YA book you grew up with
Definitely Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta. I first read this when I was about 10 or 11 years old and loved it immediately. Illegitimacy aside, I identified with Josie so much and the difficulties she had growing up as an Italian-Australian. Every time I read this book, I get so many feels! Even now, at 28 years old, I still love this book.
4. Favourite Aussie YA book released in 2016
The Sidekicks by Will Kostakis is my favourite Aussie YA book released in 2016, I could barely put it down. It’s about three guys who are not friends but their mutual best friend passes away and they’re left to deal with the aftermath. My synopsis is crap but the book is not! Read it 🙂
5. Aussie YA Debut you are looking forward to
I’m cheating a bit here because I’m behind on all the upcoming new releases, so I’m listing books I’ve bought that are debuts for 2016 – they’ve already been released but I haven’t read them yet… Surely that counts! Yellow by Meg Jacobson and Frankie by Shivaun Plozza are top of my list 🙂
6. Favourite Aussie YA series
I was immersed in the Tomorrow series by John Marsden from a very young age and I’d love to reread them to see if they still hold up all these years later. I own a lot of Aussie YA series I haven’t read yet, or where I’ve only read one book, so I don’t feel like I can name any of those series. Although, I do think that Illuminae will have all series beat by the time the last book is released.
7. Unexpected Aussie YA surprise
I really shouldn’t call this an unexpected surprise, given all the hype surrounding it’s release, but Illuminae was a huge surprise for me. Probably because I’d never read science fiction before and the format was like nothing I’ve ever read, but WOW. Also, I CANNOT WAIT for Gemina. That is all.
8. Aussie YA Book you always recommend to others
I push On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta every chance I get, I’m addicted to this book and I need everyone to know just how awesome it is! The recommendation always comes with a disclaimer – you won’t know what’s happening for the first 50 pages but stick with it and you won’t regret it!
9. An Aussie YA book on your TBR
I’ve got more than one Aussie YA book on my TBR, here are the books that have been on it for the longest time:
10. Recommend your favourite Aussie YA Bloggers!
I’m a bit of a stalker of blogs, in that I read but don’t comment… I feel really bad about it but I’m usually reading on the run and don’t have time to comment (i.e. while I’m waiting for my matter to get called in Court) or several days after the post has published and I feel like I’m late to the party. However, these are some of the blogs I love:
