As I’m sure most of you know, Illuminae has finally been released out into the wild for all of us book nerds to gobble up and read. Last Friday, I had the opportunity to go to the Melbourne book launch of Illuminae and it was fantastic!
One of the perks of moving back to Melbourne was the ability to go to bookish events. A lot of these events are held during the week, and it just wasn’t possible for me to attend while I lived in Bendigo. This book launch is the perfect example of one such event, and I was so excited to be able to go.
The event was held at my favourite book shop, Dymocks on Collins Street – I could get lost in that place for hours! It was put on by the publishers, Allen & Unwin, and this was the second bookish event I’d been to in the space of a week held by this publisher (I went to Chris Judd’s signing at Northland Shopping Centre, but more on that another time 🙂 ). Boy did they do a fantastic job – we were in a fairly small space and there were lots of us, as I’m sure you can imagine. But while we were waiting the food and drinks flowed and the authors were out in no time at all!
As I’m sure you already know, Illuminae is written by two amazing Australian authors, Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. Jay spoke first and he told us a bit about the book and said all of the thank-yous on behalf of the two authors.
Then Amie spoke, reiterating some of the thank-yous and also explaining how this book came to be. She spoke about how US taxation law brought her and Jay together and where the idea for Illuminae came from. Needless to say, it made me even more excited to read the book!
We then had a Mexican Wave of Illuminae books, which you can see here on Jay’s Instagram page! As per usual, Melbourne kicked Sydney’s butt 😀 Then it was time for the book signing!
Look at my precious! Specially signed with my name on it, not to mention the signed bookmark! That bookmark will be living in my copy of Illuminae, otherwise I’ll be sure to lose it…
Both Jay and Amie were really gracious with their time, even indulging me with a photo opportunity 🙂
This photo wasn’t taken at the launch, I took it on my way home but I just had to share – how majestic does Flinders Street Station look at night!?
To wrap up, I had an amazing time at the Illuminae launch and I can’t wait to read the book. If Jay and Amie are coming to a city near you, you MUST go!
